The Eternal Supermodel Outfit? Jeans And A Blazer

Certain trends are tough to get on board with. Naked dresses – like those worn by the likes of Zoë Kravitz and Kendall Jenner last year – aren’t for everyone. Nor are visible thongs (Julia Fox, we’re looking at you) and risqué “curtain reveal” tops. Thankfully, you don’t need inches of skin on show to tick off every trend.

The supermodel set’s eternal uniform is one that’s surprisingly easy to emulate. Championed by Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek and Claudia Schiffer in their ’90s heydays and by their modern-day counterparts, the humble blazer-jeans combo is a surefire winner.

Skinny jeans and a razor-sharp blazer comprised Moss’s downtime looks in the aughts. Accented with It-accessories, including her beloved Mulberry Bayswater tote, fluffy mukluk boots and extensive boho scarf collection, she put a Notting Hill spin on the classic formula.

Campbell’s ’00s takes on the blazer-jeans combo were similarly memorable. In 2008, she was papped at a show wearing bootcut jeans, a tee and a pristine white fitted blazer. Around the same time, Schiffer was completing stylish school runs in French-girl checked blazers, skinny blue jeans and bug-eyed sunnies.

Nowadays, Kendall Jenner puts her own business-casual spin on the look. She recently swapped out her leggings for bootcut jeans, a fresh white T-shirt, a crisp shirt, a checked brown Sandro blazer and heeled black boots.

Kaia Gerber regularly borrows from the style playbook of her supermodel mother, Cindy Crawford. Oversized, structured blazers are a mainstay in the young model’s wardrobe, often paired with straight-leg jeans and Dad trainers (New Balance 990s are a favourite style).

Like her contemporaries, Hailey Bieber also swears by blazers and jeans, but wears denim of the baggier variety. Bieber’s secret is adding a sprinkling of cult new-season pieces courtesy of big-name brands into her looks.

The Hadid sisters are also fans of the trusty blazer-jeans hack. Bella has been known to shrug a blazer over her vintage staples to smarten up her look, while Gigi was seen strolling the New York streets in painterly Ottolinger party pants, a Re/Done tank top, Eytys loafers and a boxy Balenciaga blazer last September.

Revive your own favourite pair of jeans with a smart blazer and lo-fi trainers this winter for a supermodel-approved uniform that stands the test of time.
